28th Sept 2010 - the corn's a poppin !

Well finally your corn is ready we 'ear you say!

Yip, 'ear' today , gone tomorrow!

We await 'earing how sweet they are from the lucky few who got to take one home.

Pumpkins are a poppin' too! They'll be put in a cool dark place and will hopefully keep til Halloween when some kind soul might carve it, photograph it, spook it on the web and tell us how sweet the pie or soup they made was.

Our stunning 'Frog-i-tat' was put out today also, so here's hoping they hop right along to St. B's for a wee nap in their new house and a wee feast on all the slugs and snails!

Bulbs glorious bulbs, but where will they bloom? Almost everywhere from spring onwards. 50 more planted today with lots more to do so if any of you Grown-Ups have any more time on your hands after that awesome work you've been doing for us - feel free to get bulbing!

And finally...........we reckon we're almost there with the greenhouse. At last count we estimate we must have around 1000 all washed, cut and stacked ready to be constructed.

We Love You Grown-Ups, think of the satisfaction, how good would it be to brag " we built a greenhouse".

Come on, you know you want to!!!!!!

Bottles are ready for that frame.

Happy Gardening.

21st Sept. 2010 - We're Ready For You Grown-Ups!

Well we worked our little wellies off again this week!

All hands were to the pumps as we prepared the hundreds of 2L plastic bottles collected for Thursday for our Get Your Grown-Ups Growing Day.

We all worked really well 'de-cap-ing' , rinsing, cutting off the bottoms and then stacking them on 2m canes.

Transporting them to the container was eventful -                                           How many gardening club members and plastic bottles do YOU think can get in one small lift?     Answers on a postcard !

While some had fun doing that, others very efficiently sorted the recent delivery of 'Top of the Class' Bulbs all ready for distributing tomorrow and for planting on Thursday.

Finally we gathered in the new Wizard of Oz  themed 'Sensory' garden to plant out the front border with some rainbow violas which will hopefully be resplendent throughout the winter and some iris bulbs that will bloom in spring.

A bit of tidying up to the bark, refilling the bird feeders and helping mark out the Adult Areas for Thursday and we were all ready for a well earned rest!

Over to you Grown-Ups ................................... Do Us Proud !

14\09\2010

This week in gardening club we split into groups to work on different tasks. Our tasks were preparing the container, building a cold frame, harvesting and seeding. The container was delivered on the 10\09\2010, it is blue on the outside and wood on the inside and very dusty!!! It had nails and spider s in it as well and we had to sweep it all out. It is now ready for gardening tools etc.

The weather was sunny and windy at the start and then it was raining with  hailstones!!! We continue to harvest and this we picked carrots, beans, cabbage and pumpkins. Some of the beds have now been cleared and we put in chicken manure to help put nutrients back into the soil. Its a smelly job but someone had to do it !

The cold frame was built by two members and an adult helper. This  frame will be used to protect young plants during the winter.

The last group used cardboard rolls as pots to plant perennials, we used the cardboard as it is biodegradable.

As you can see it has been a very busy week, see you all next week!

7th September 2010 - Tidy Up Time

Well rain almost stopped play this week but thankfully we were able to get up to the garden for a short while in between heavy showers.

Although more harvesting was done, mainly carrots, beans and spring onions, most of our time was spent tidying up in preparation for our Get Your Grown-Ups Growing Day.

Our pumpkins are coming on well and at last we have ears of corn developing.

We haven't decided yet whether we'll sow 'Green Manure' - plants that put Nitrogen back into the soil and help soil structure through the winter or whether we have enough work on our shovels just now.

As always too much to do in too little time.

Watch this space.

Happy Autumn Gardening.
